BASTYON

The following is information from Sarah Westall’s interview with Daniel Satchkov, founder of Bastyon, like in “bastyon for freedom.” Bastyon is a revolutionary anti-censorship decentralized publishing and social platform. Even if authorities block you from accessing certain domains, you can still communicate with others through Bastyon. Based on blockchain technology, it runs on a set of computers worldwide, not controlled by any single entity—self-policed by users with a good reputation where nobody records your keystrokes, viewing habits, or searches.

Censorship is about to shift into a higher gear with authorities censoring domains by deleting DNS servers. The purpose of a DNS server is to translate what you type into your browser into something a computer can understand and use to locate a website. In other words, its purpose is to convert a domain name into an IP address such as 71.232.101.120. Currently, censorship comes in the form of “here is a list of domains you cannot access.” But this is about to change to “here is a list of domains you can access.” The domains you are allowed may be CNN, MSNBC, Facebook, Twitter, etcetera. Or what could also happen is that the approved domains will have regular speed, but other websites will be very slow.

New websites start as “givers” to attract users. For example, Twitter started as a free speech platform. But a transition from “free” to “restrictive” is a corporate phenomenon. After a certain point, a successful platform will transition from a “giver” to a “taker.” Successful platforms always succumb to control because of the profit motive, government regulation, being banned by their service provider, or having their banking services interrupted. Bastyon, like cryptocurrencies, or like the Lenox operating system, has no corporate structure, no employees, no owners, no bank account, no central computer. It is a decentralized open-source platform made possible by unrelated global programmers and is freely available to everyone. Even though Bastyon is available on your smartphone, because Apple or Google own your phone, you should use the desktop app on your personal computer.
